KCPS Student-Artists Celebrate Equity, Inclusion
Congratulations to the winners of the KCPS Department of Equity, Inclusion & Innovation Hispanic Heritage Month art contest! Throughout September and October, KCPS students were asked to reflect on the theme "Si se puede!" which means "Yes I can!" In addition to making art, students learned about the positive contributions of Latinos to society and celebrated Hispanic culture.
The four winners of the "Si se puede!" art competition were recognized by the KCPS Board of Directors last month. Here's what they had to say about their art.
ADAM HERGINS
Carver Dual Language School
“My inspiration was my school because it is a dual language school.”
VANCE MINOR
Gladstone Elementary
“I’ve grown up in a very diverse community my entire life. My very best friends are from other parts of the world.”
VALENCIA ARANDA
Foreign Language Academy
“My inspiration for creating my painting was the word ‘strength’ and being a Latina woman in society. I used symbols that mean strength in different cultures.”
GUADALUPE PACHECO ORNELAS
Northeast High School
“My parents didn’t get as many opportunities as I did growing up. They worked hard for me. I’m going to be the first in my family to graduate because of what they did for me, and I’m really grateful for that.”
The student-artists also received $100 gift cards. Thank you, Adam, Vance, Valencia and Guadalupe, for sharing your art with us!
