KCPS Board of Directors hosted a town hall meeting on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the Southwest Early College Campus to discuss recent developments and next steps for the Bingham school site.

 

After much consideration, the Board decided not to move forward with selling the site to Walmart. Instead, the building will be considered for demolition in fiscal year 2015. KCPS will be evaluating future options for the site (retain vs sell) during its facilities master planning process.

KCPS approved the sale of Blenheim in May 2012 for development of a health clinic and senior housing.  In Dec 2012, the buyer terminated the sales contract after its health clinic partner pulled out of the project.  KCPS is actively marketing the school site again through Block Real Estate Services.

KCPS received proposal for Bryant in November 2012. During the time that we have been evaluating the proposals, KCPS kicked off a facility planning effort.  At this time, KCPS has determined that it is prudent to complete the facility planning process before giving further consideration to the Bryant proposals.  As such, we will not be taking any further action on the Bryant proposals before the end of the calendar year.  If the decision is made that KCPS will dispose of the site, we will contact the three entities that submitted proposals and determine if they are still interested in the site.  If so, KCPS will hold a proposal presentation meeting in order to obtain your feedback on the proposals.

Community members met on April 8, 2014 at 5:30pm to discuss next steps for the Chick site and view a Time Capsule that was found inside the building during demolition.

KCPS sold Graceland to Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room on December 14, 2012 for development of the Mary Kelly Community Center. The dedication of the Mary L. Kelly Community Center was held on September 17, 2013 at the former Graceland school. Town Fork Creek and Blue Hills Neighborhood Associations will now have the opportunity to access computer resources, GED classes, and a cafe, all within walking distance. The site will also house space for several nonprofits and dance classes for Upper Room students

KCPS School Board approved the sale of Swinney to Kansas City Sustainable Development Partners, LLC for use as housing + office. Demolition work began immediately after close of the sale to reveal the original façade. Demolition of the 1987 addition was necessary to determine if the site was eligible for listing on the National Register. After completion, the project will include renovation of the school building and construction of a new building which will include office space and market rate housing.

Thacher is located on a shared 8-acre site with Northeast Middle, which will be reopened in August 2014 as a middle school.  Thacher has sustained major fire damage and has been a frequent target of vandalism, creating safety concerns as KCPS reopens Northeast Middle.  The entire shared site is needed to better serve the Northeast Middle School students with expanded field space and additional parking.  Therefore, the Administration has recommended the demolition of Thacher.  At the March 26, 2014 board meeting, at the request of community members, the school board delayed taking action on a demolition contract for six months.  More information can be found, HERE.

On April 10, new members of the Kansas City Public Schools  Board of Education were sworn in and new officers were elected.  The administration and school board chair need time to properly brief the new board members on the repurposing process in general, as well as on the specifics of the sale of Westport High School, prior to a board vote.  As such, we are postponing board discussion of the sale of Westport High and are working towards a board vote at the May 28 board meeting.  When that date has been finalized, staff will provide an update via email and on the repurposing website.  We appreciate your patience.  Please do not hesitate to contact us at repurposing@kcpublicschools.org if you have any questions/comments in the meantime.

KCPS sold Westport Middle to Kansas City Sustainable Development Partners (KCSDP) for reuse as a mixed-use development on January 27, 2014. KCSDP is a locally based development company and proposes the historic conversion of the school building, which will include up 100 market-rate apartments, as well as commercial space which will be primarily targeted to non-profit office use. Grounds will be used for urban farming/gardening to promote healthy living.
