The Board of Education and the City of Kansas City, Missouri City Council have authorized the execution of a non-binding agreement between the City of Kansas City, Missouri and KCPS that would facilitate the transfer of Ashland from KCPS to the City for parkland and recreational purposes. Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation Department staff has expressed interest in partnering with Boys and Girls Club for the use/maintenance of site improvements.

In response to requests from the community, KCPS hired Midland Wrecking, Inc to perform the abatement and demolition of the former Bingham Middle School, 7618 Wyandotte St. Work is scheduled to commence April 11, 2016 with a tentative completion date of August 11, 2016.

On April 25, 2016 Sunflower Development Group (SDG) will present an updated senior affordable housing proposal for the redevelopment of Blenheim at the Tri-Blenheim Neighborhood Association meeting.  SDG would like to submit a Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) proposal to the Missouri Housing Development Corporation (MHDC) for the Fall 2016 funding round.

At the request of the Sheraton and SPENA Neighborhood Associations, KCPS demolished the Chick site in 2014.  The Board of Education and the City of Kansas City, Missouri City Council have authorized the execution of a non-binding agreement between the City of Kansas City, Missouri and KCPS that would facilitate the transfer of Chick from KCPS to the City. The site falls within the Mt. Cleveland Neighborhood Action Plan area, one of the City’s targeted areas for development, and would be held by the City for future housing development

KCPS sold Douglass to Guadalupe Center, Inc. on July 2, 2012 for relocation of the Alta Vista High School. The school opened in Fall 2013. In Fall 2015, the High School relocated to another site and the Alta Vista Middle School moved to Douglass.

KCPS is pleased to announce that the former Dunbar School, will soon serve as the new home for Carousel Cares, an adult day care facility. Carousel Cares has been in operation for over 13 years, serving people all over Kansas City. Carousel Cares began building improvements in April 2016 and plans to relocate its operations to Dunbar in late summer/early fall.

KCPS sold Graceland to Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room on December 14, 2012 for development of a community center. The dedication of the Mary L. Kelly Community Center was held on September 17, 2013 and now serves the Town Fork Creek and Blue Hills neighborhoods.

Due to its condition, Greenwood is a candidate for demolition. The Historic East Neighborhood Coalition and the South Round Top Neighborhood Association have requested the building be demolished. KCPS has recently conducted an environmental assessment that is required before demolition can proceed and is working to identify funding to proceed with environmental abatement and demolition. With support from the Blue Valley Neighborhood Association (BVNA), KCPS demolished McCoy in Fall 2013. During the Summer 2013, BVNA worked with 360 Architecture to develop a conceptual site plan through a series of public meetings with local stakeholders, CLICK HERE for details. PIAC funds were secured in 2015 to construct park/playground improvements on the site.

Westport High

Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) and Kansas City Sustainable Development Partners, LLC (KCSDP) entered into a sales contract in September 2015 for the redevelopment of Westport High, 315 E. 39th St., that included a use restriction in order to address community requests that the existing track/field area remain open to community use. Based off the feedback received at a community meeting on March 21, KCPS and KCSDP reached an agreement that will revise the use restriction on the field/track area to allow for parking, if needed.  In return, KCSDP has committed to include open space and either a walking trail or track on the site that will be available for community use.

On March 23, 2015, KCPS approved changes to the original development proposal, which removed the residential component of the project and incorporated additional non-profit/commercial uses. Grounds will be used for urban farming/gardening to promote healthy living. Construction commenced in Winter 2016.
