The Board of Education and the City of Kansas City, Missouri City Council have authorized the execution of a non-binding agreement between the City of Kansas City Missouri and KCPS that would facilitate the transfer of Ashland from KCPS to the City for parkland and recreational purposes. Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation Department staff has expressed interest in partnering with Boys and Girls Club for the use/maintenance of site improvements.

In response to requests from the community, KCPS hired Midland Wrecking, Inc to perform the abatement and demolition of the former Bingham Middle School, 7618 Wyandotte St. Work commenced in April 2016 with a tentative completion date of September/October 2016.

KCPS and Sunflower Development Group (SDG) have entered into a contract for the purchase of the Blenheim site. SDG proposes the historic conversion of the school into 52 affordable senior rental units with integrated social services provided to residents by Phoenix Family Housing. The sale is contingent upon SDG securing a Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) award from the Missouri Housing Development Corporation (MHDC). The award announcements are expected in December 2016/January 2017. If tax credits are awarded for the project, Sunflower expects to begin construction in Summer 2017 and to have the building open for residents in Summer 2018. The Tri-Blenheim Neighborhood Association has endorsed Sunflower's redevelopment proposal and believes that it "could be a catalyst for other developments in our area".

KCPS has determined that Bryant is needed for future KCPS use through the Master Planning process. The district is currently working with representatives of Wornall Homestead, Countryside and Country Club Homes neighborhood associations to identify interim solutions.

At the request of the Sheraton and SPENA Neighborhood Associations, KCPS demolished the Chick site in 2014.  The Board of Education and the City of Kansas City, Missouri City Council have authorized the execution of a non-binding agreement between the City of Kansas City Missouri and KCPS that would facilitate the transfer of Chick from KCPS to the City. The site falls within the Mt. Cleveland Neighborhood Action Plan area, one of the City’s targeted areas for development, and would be held by the City for future housing development

KCPS sold Douglass to Guadalupe Center, Inc. on July 2, 2012, for the relocation of the Alta Vista High School. The school opened in Fall 2013. In Fall 2015, the High School relocated to another site and the Alta Vista Middle School moved to Douglass.

KCPS is pleased to announce that the former Dunbar School, will soon serve as the new home for Carousel Cares, an adult day care facility. Carousel Cares has been in operation for over 13 years, serving people all over Kansas City. Carousel Cares began building improvements in April 2016 and plans to relocate its operations to Dunbar in late summer/early fall.

KCPS sold Graceland to Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room on December 14, 2012, for the development of a community center. The dedication of the Mary L. Kelly Community Center was held on September 17, 2013, and now serves the Town Fork Creek and Blue Hills neighborhoods.

Due to its condition, Greenwood is a candidate for demolition. The Historic East Neighborhood Coalition and the South Round Top Neighborhood Association have requested the building be demolished. KCPS has recently conducted an environmental assessment that is required before demolition can proceed and is working to identify funding to proceed with environmental abatement and demolition.

With support from the Blue Valley Neighborhood Association (BVNA), KCPS demolished McCoy in Fall 2013. During the Summer 2013, BVNA worked with 360 Architecture to develop a conceptual site plan through a series of public meetings with local stakeholders, CLICK HERE for details. PIAC funds were secured in 2015 to construct park/playground improvements on the site.      

In March 2016, the Board of Education and the City of Kansas City, Missouri City Council authorized the execution of a non-binding agreement between the City of Kansas City and KCPS that would facilitate the transfer of McCoy from KCPS to the City for parkland and recreational purposes.

On February 25, 2015, the KCPS School Board approved the demolition of Thacher to better serve Northeast Middle students with expanded field space. The demolition of Thacher was completed in September 2015. KCPS is finalizing construction plans to redevelop the site for athletic fields and working with the community on a Thacher memorial. The Parks and Recreation Department has expressed interest in combined the 14 acres site with the adjacent West Rock Creek Park.

Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) sold Westport High to Sustainable Development Partners Kansas City (SDPKC) on August 12, 2016. SDPKC has proposed a mixed-use redevelopment that includes the adaptive reuse of the historic school. The sale of Westport High allows SDPKC to move forward with its goal for an integrated redevelopment of the two Westport schools, also known as Westport Commons.

On March 23, 2015, KCPS approved changes to the original development proposal, which removed the residential component of the project and incorporated additional non-profit/commercial uses. Grounds will be used for urban farming/gardening to promote healthy living. Construction commenced in Winter 2016.
