BINGHAM SCHOOL UPDATE

The Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) hosted a public meeting on Jan. 10, 2013 for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., to present its proposal for the development of Bingham as a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market.  Since the public meeting, KCPS has received many inquiries for additional information and/or feedback about the Wal-Mart proposal.

KCPS appreciates and values the feedback that has been submitted to date.  Prior to making any recommendations to the School Board about the Wal-Mart proposal, KCPS staff has requested Wal-Mart representatives consider making revisions to its proposal in order to address community concerns/issues.  As of Jan 31, Wal-Mart has made the following revisions to its proposal:

  • Reduced the hours of operation to 6 a.m. to midnight.
  • Confirmed participation in the CID.
  • Wal-Mart is also looking at alternatives/options to reduce/mitigate traffic impact on Wyandotte/77th St, including negotiating an access agreement with the commercial property to the north.  Access from Wornall would be at 77th St. to ensure safe left turn movements (Trolley Track Trail would be separated from the vehicular traffic via a bridge).
  • Wal-Mart has also offered to conduct a design review with representatives from Tower Homes Neighborhood Association, Waldo Business Association, KCPS and the City

KCPS hosted a public meeting on June 13, 2013 to discuss recent changes to the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market proposal, solicit community feedback, and review next steps for the Bingham site. To provide Kansas City Public Schools with your feedback, please fill out the feedback form below and submit by email to repurposing@kcpublicschools.org or you can mail them to Repurposing Initiative, 1211 McGee, KCMO 64106. KCPS anticipates making a decision to pursue/reject the Neighborhood Market proposal in late Summer 2013.
