 The Adult Education and Literacy department provides educational services to older youth and adults who aspire to enhance their educational level by preparing for the GED test. 
 
Educational services offered include:
  • ESL
  • GED Preparation
  • Missouri Option Program 

 
English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum teaches language skills to speakers of other languages, for everyday life. Courses cover Grammar, Conversational English, American idioms, and language-related issues associated with the naturalization process and U.S. citizenship preparation. Until further notice, ESL classes scheduled from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. have been canceled.
 
GED Preparation
GED preparation is conducted in various locations throughout the Kansas City Metropolitan area.  Morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday classes are available to accommodate the busy lives of those who are interested in receiving educational support.  In addition to GED preparation, we also offer basic computer training, literacy tutoring, and life-skills classes.  For specific GED testing information, please click here.
 
Missouri Option
The Missouri Option program of Kansas City Public Schools is designed to offer eligible students a viable second opportunity to stay in school and acquire the necessary high-school-level knowledge and skills to pass the GED Test and earn a high school diploma within the same time frame as their peers. Students must be 17-18 years old and too far behind in credits to graduate with their peers. Mandatory orientation placement testing is held every month.
