About Central Academy of Excellence
Central first opened its doors in 1884. As the school celebrates 129 years, the theme for the school year is "Raising the Bar". Central students are encouraged to work hard towards their educational and social goals in order to be successful in our highly competitive global society.
Larry Gray II, Ph.D.
Dr. Gray graduated from Olivet College with a bachelor degree in Biology and Psychology. Dr. Gray also holds a Masters and Doctorate of Educational Leadership degree from Western Michigan University.
Dr. Gray started his career in education at Starr Commonwealth School for Boys as a Counselor. He then joined Battle Creek Public Schools as the Director of Workforce Development. Dr. Gray other leadership posts include, Harper Woods School as the Assistant Principal and Director of Career and Technical Education. Dr. Gray recently served as the Associate High School Principal in Utica Community Schools which serves the greater Metropolitan Detroit Area.
He has honed his student-centered approach through his work as a counselor, college professor and school administrator. Dr. Gray encourages students to become life-long learners and passionate about their education.
He has received extensive training in Life Space Crisis Intervention, a program that reclaims students’ behavior and Choice Theory/ Reality Therapy which helps students take responsibility for their actions and help to empower students. The training has helped him become an expert in working with hard-to-reach students within the educational system.
Dr. Gray is honored to serve as the Principal of Central Academy of Excellence.
