Community Based Learning
Whittier students take a variety of field trips to experience activies and sites that are available in our community. Some of the sites visited are the Nelson Art Gallery, Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, the Kansas City Zoo, the Federal Reserve Bank, Hallmark's Kaleidoscope, and others sponsored by the Kansas City Art's Partners.
Whittier's population of English Language Learners numbers over 200. These students are served by the ESL staff, which includes three teachers, Ms. Ratzlaff, Mr. Tchernev, and Ms. Standley, as well as two paraprofessionals, Ms. Le and Ms. Salas. Mr. Tchernev pushes into the 5th- and 6th-grade classrooms to do math instruction. The rest of the ESL staff pushes into classrooms to help ELL's understand instruction, acquire academic language, and master the content. Beginning ELL's are pulled out of class for a time each day to receive intense language instruction from Ms. Ratzlaff and Ms. Salas.
Whittier has several health programs in place to help the students identify and treat any health concerns. Score One is provided by the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and the Derron Cherry Foundation. They do a total physical assessment of each child with their parents permission. Big Smile is also provided to our students to assess their dental needs.
