SchoolReach automated phone messaging system

In our effort to improve communication between parents and school, the Kansas City Public Schools is implementing a new automated phone messaging system in mid-November 2011. This new system, SchoolReach, will enable school personnel to notify all households and parents by phone within minutes of an emergency or unplanned event that causes early dismissal, school cancellation or late start. The service may also be used from time-to-time to communicate general announcements or reminders.

When used by KCPS, the service will call all phone numbers in our selected parent contact lists and will deliver a recorded message from a school administrator. The service will deliver the message to both live answer and answering machines. No answers (phones ringing over 40 sec.) and busies will be automatically retried twice in fifteen minute intervals after the initial call.

In an effort to make the best and most accurate use of SchoolReach, we are asking that you fill out the form available below if you have not already done so. After completing this for each of your students, please double check for accuracy and return it to us promptly.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact your neighborhood school. Thank you!

Winter Weather

The Public Relations Department of the Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) always seeks to make sure students, staff and the community are well informed about breaking news related to KCPS. The notification for the cancellation of classes due to extreme cold, snow or ice is as follows:

The decision to cancel classes is made by the Superintendent of Schools based on the recommendation of his administrative team, including Facilities, Transportation, Safety and Security, and the Executive Cabinet.

KCPS strives to notify the public of the cancellation of classes as soon as the decision is made. In many cases this notification should occur by 5:30 a.m. the day of the cancellation. Every effort will be made to notify the public the day before the cancellation. Notification will be made using the following outlets and resources; please check more than one to ensure you are receiving accurate information:

  • Major radio and television stations
  • Main page of the KCPS website
  • KCPS Facebook and Twitter pages
  • Subscribers to our SchoolReach system will receive an automated phone call informing them of the cancellation
  • 418-NEWS

If the decision to cancel classes is made during the weekend or 12 hours or less before classes are to occur, an automated phone message will be sent to employees and staff.

Unless covered by a special announcement, a general school closing also includes all special education classes and adult education classes.

If classes are canceled, the following personnel will be on duty unless otherwise stated: all administrators and supervisors, all 12-month employees, all campus officers, all custodial and maintenance staff.

Should early dismissal be necessary during the school day, radio and TV announcements will be made and each school will be notified.
