The first day of the 2015-2016 school year is Monday, Aug. 10. The Back-To-School Hotline is 816-418-8825 and is open 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. July 26-Aug. 7 and 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Aug. 10-14. Here is some basic information you need to know to get the best start to the school year. 

Attendance Policy

KCPS strongly encourages all students to attend school and class on a regular basis. By coming to school on time every day, students:
Don't miss important classroom time.
  • Avoid delays in learning caused by make-up work
  • Obtain needed practice and skill development
  • Improve their chances of high achievement
  • Learn the importance of discipline and dedication
KCPS has developed policies to increase student achievement by encouraging attendance. Under these policies, there are consequences for students who do not attend school. These consequence include:
  • Grades K-6: A student who misses more than 15 days in the school year may be retained in the same grade
  • Grades 7-12: Straight Scheduling - Students may receive failing grades in coursed for which they miss eight (8) days in a school semester.

Back To School Nights 

Schools host back-to-school orientations at various times throughout August to give the students the tools and information they need to start off the school year right. Please contact the school directly with any questions.

Bell times

Bell times will remain the same for all schools except Success Academy at Anderson for the 2015-2016 school year. Find the bell times for your school here


The most important date for back-to-school is Monday, Aug. 10, the first day of school for K-12 and Montessori pre-k students. Visit our online Academic Calendar to see all of our other important dates for the 20-15-2016 school year. (Please note that all other pre-kindergarten students start school on Aug. 31.)

Student Handbook 

The 2015-2016 Student Handbook and Code of Conduct includes very important guidelines, advice, procedures and rules designed to help KCPS students succeed.


If you still need to enroll, you may do so at your school (find your neighborhood school by entering your home address here) or at the Admissions Office at 1211 McGee St, Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more detailed information about enrollment, visit you want to check the status of your enrollment, please call the Admissions Department at 816-418-7505..

Child Nutritional Services

In KCPS, every child eats free! A special federal program allows us to offer breakfast and lunch to every student at no charge. That means that families no longer have to complete any paperwork in order to qualify for free or reduced-prices school meals. Healthy eating is critical for learning and our staff of nutritional experts work hard to make and serve the best and tastiest meals possible. Children who have access to nutrition meals are more likely to succeed in school. Please encourage your child to participate in our breakfast and lunch programs whenever they have the opportunity. Current immunization records are required to enroll or register students. Use the guides linked below to determine whether your child needs new or updated immunizations.
  • Recommended immunizations for children from birth to 6 years old - English, Español
  • Recommended immunizations for children from 7 through 18 years old - English, Español
KCPS is offering free immunizations to any child during the following Back-To-School nights:
  • 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at Northeast Middle School, 4904 Independence Ave., Kansas City, MO
  • 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at Whittier Elementary School, 1012 Bales Ave., Kansas City, MO
These immunization clinics are free and open to all school-age children. 


The Kansas City Public Schools is proud to announce its roster of principals and vice principals for the 2015-2016 school year. These individuals will be at the forefront of executing many important objectives, most notably moving KCPS toward accreditation and increased student achievement.

Uniform Policy

Principals decide the uniform policy for the school, but all are based on the KCPS dress code. Please contact your school if you have any questions about uniforms.
