    Carver Principal Michael Coulter

    Mike Coulter joined the Carver Dual Language staff in 2012. The 2019-20 school year will be his fifth year as Carver’s principal after previously serving as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher, math interventionist, and vice principal at the school. Prior to working at Carver, Mike was a second and third grade teacher in the Maryville (MO) and Ft. Osage school districts, a principal for 25 years in Cuba (MO), Lee’s Summit, and Hope Leadership Academy in Kansas City. He also was an instructor at Kansas Starbase, a STEM program for upper elementary students sponsored by the Department of Defense.

    Mr. Coulter holds three degrees from Northwest Missouri State University: Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, Master of Science in Elementary Administration, and Education Specialist in Elementary Administration and the Superintendency. He has completed additional graduate work at the University of Missouri and the University of Central Missouri. Mike comes from a family of educators—both of his parents and his wife, Leasa, have all been teachers. Mike and Leasa live in rural Jackson County, near Grain Valley. They have two children. John is an artist, living in Los Angeles, and Mark, operates a business in Oak Grove. Mike’s hobbies and interests include nature photography, traveling, fishing, reading historical fiction and non-fiction, the Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

    Dr. Krista Sly

    Dr. Krista Sly holds a BS in K-8 Education from Northwest Missouri State University (NWMSU), a MS in Educational Leadership from NWMSU, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Baker University. She has been teaching and serving as a leader in public education for over 30 years. She is passionate about facilitating programming that develops the whole child. Her doctorate work focused on the correlation between Missouri middle school math achievement and school climate. She has implemented social emotional curriculums including Top Twenty Teens, and The Leader In Me and is passionate about the emotional intelligence of her students.

    Krista Sly began her educational career in the Fairfax R-3 School District as a 6th grade teacher at Fairfax Elementary School. Ms. Sly spent six years teaching within the district before accepting her first principal position in the Fairfax School District. Over the next six years, Ms. Sly served as an PreK-6 building principal. During this tenure, Ms. Sly opened a new Missouri Preschool Project Program in her district. Ms. Sly spent 8 years in St. Joseph School District serving as a PreK-6 Principal at Neely Elementary School and as a Middle School Principal at Robidoux Middle School. Her middle school experiences continued to drive her passion of developing the whole child.

    Her educational philosophy is based on his uncompromising belief that our most precious resource is our students. All students should have a positive learning environment, strong and knowledgeable leadership, a committed and focused educational team, an encouraging community, and a supportive family.

    In her free time, Krista enjoys working in the dirt, working out, walking, and spending time with her family.
