Blueprint 2030: Voting Results and Next Steps

On January 25, 2023, the KCPS Board of Directors voted on the revised Blueprint 2030 recommendations brought during the Jan. 11 Board meeting. The recommendation to close Troost Elementary School and Longfellow Elementary School was based on feedback received from our students, staff, families and community this fall and will help move us toward our goal of enhancing the student experience in KCPS.

The vote was as follows:

  • Troost Elementary: Yes
  • Longfellow Elementary: Yes

What Happens Next?

The KCPS Transition Teams will work closely with students, families and staff at impacted schools to help them feel welcome at their new schools. We will host school tours and enrollment days/nights to make this process easier for our students and families.

We understand that a decision to close a school is not easy and helping students and families transition to their new school home must be done quickly and with integrity. The transition planning will include:

  • Efforts to ensure the transfer of students is a positive experience and ensures retention of students at KCPS
  • Parent/guardian evaluation of school choice options that are best for their child
  • Reallocation of resources and staff that fully support student learning and academic programs

Additionally, we will continue to collaborate with the community through our Moving Forward Together Education and Engagement series in the next few months.

About

KCPS is embarking upon an engagement process that will capture how we approach the future of schools in our school district and community. This process of engaging our school district and community will be an opportunity to gather voices and participate in conversations that are important to the future of our schools. What an opportunity to help shape and refine our plans for the future - an opportunity in which we invite all of our schools and community stakeholders to participate. Blueprint 2030 will serve as an update to the KCPS 2018-23 Strategic Plan and guide of our work over the next decade by outlining five and ten year goals.

KCPS wants to ensure all children living within the school district boundaries have access to a quality Pre-K through 12 educational experience and graduate ready for college, career and life. KCPS has been making great strides in academic achievement and providing engaging academic programing, but we know that additional progress is needed to better serve all our students.

Blueprint 2030 is a year-long planning and community engagement effort that will define how KCPS should serve students in the future and the system-level changes we need to take to get there. It is a blueprint for the future that maximizes KCPS resources, improves efficiencies, and enhances the educational experience and academic outcomes for all students.

During Blueprint 2030, KCPS will work with our staff, parents, students and the KC community to:

  • Conduct an assessment and evaluation of our current school system (where are we now?)
  • Establish goals for the future (where do we want to be?)
  • Evaluate scenarios (what options do we have for getting us from where we are now to where we want to be?)
  • Identify recommendations for action (how do we get there?)

Community feedback is critical to the success of Blueprint 2030.

ENGAGEMENT SERIES

Join us! We are looking for thoughts and suggestions as we navigate our Blueprint 2030 and strategic planning process. These engagement series opportunities are provided for our students, families, staff and community. We welcome participation!

We started our engagement process in early 2020, taking a pause during the start of the COVID pandemic. As we’ve begun to re-engage with this work, we are eager to hear the voice of our community.

KCPS will be offering several platforms and venues for staff and community engagement. Our Engagement Series is designed to collaborate with and listen to local stakeholders, including our staff and community. There will be opportunities for in-person conversations through focus groups and virtual town hall meetings. There are also opportunities for input through online surveys and our Thoughtexchange platform.
