John Fierro Kansas City Notable Latino

KCPS is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month featuring notable Latino community members who have made a difference in the city and/or the nation. Today, we honor John Fierro, President/CEO of Mattie Rhodes Center and a long-time public figure in Kansas City.

KCPS is continuing our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with a spotlight on Rebecca Jaramillo, an advocate for equal rights and a founder of Fiesta Hispana, one of the first celebrations of Hispanic Heritage Month in Kansas City.

Local Kansas City Hero Primitivo Garcia

Primitivo Garcia is often referred to as Kansas City's first local Hispanic hero. One KCPS elementary school is named after this hero after he gave his life to save his English teacher in 1967.

School Board Seeking Individuals to Represent KCPS on KCPS Retirement System Board of Trustees

The Kansas City Public Schools Board of Directors is currently accepting applications from individuals interested in serving as the school system’s representative and alternative representative on the Jackson County Board of Equalization.

The KCPS Board will select a representative and an alternate representative to serve the one (1) year term. The Jackson County Board of Equalization is an independent Board composed of citizen taxpayers of Jackson County. Its mission is to fully and fairly equalize the value of all real and tangible personal property in the county for purposes of taxation and to provide an appeal forum for taxpayers to correct perceived inequities in the assessment of value. The Board strives to allow taxpayers an efficient, public, unbiased, courteous and informative manner of addressing grievances surrounding the imposition of taxes by the county.

Individuals interested in serving on the Board of Equalization can submit their names for consideration by sending a resume or background statement with complete contact information, and application to KCPS, Office of Board Services, 2901 Troost Avenue, Room 202, Kansas City MO 64109, or by emailing To be considered, individuals must reside within the KCPS district boundaries. The KCPS Board is seeking individuals must meet the qualifications of Missouri statute, 138.011 RSMo. and be able to show tax records that are proof that meet the county ordinance that no member may be delinquent in any taxes due or owing to the Jackson County.

The deadline to submit a resume is 5 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2022. The KCPS Board of Directors will conduct interviews in May 2022 and complete its selection process by June 8, 2022.

KCPS is guided by a seven-member Board of Directors elected by the district's patrons. The Board of Directors has many duties including:

  • Governance
  • Monitoring the use of financial and human resources
  • Education planning and evaluation
  • Appointing the chief administrator, the Superintendent of Schools
  • Facilities management

The Office of Board Services is the administrative arm of the Board of Directors. The Board meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Board of Education building.To meet individual Board members or to learn more about upcoming meetings and activities, contact the Office of Board Services at 816-418-7621.

  • Tuesday, November 2 - Final 3 maps presented to public - Recorded Meeting
  • Friday, November 12 (12 pm) - Final map vote by KCEB - Final Map
