About Monica Curls

Elected in 2023, Monica Curls was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, and has lived in Kansas City Public Schools’ Sub-District 4 since returning to the Kansas City area in 2004.  Monica believes that every child deserves a quality education, and she plans to ensure that the district delivers. Monica plan to focus advocacy for the district and making sure that the community knows the truth about the successes in the district and convincing them to invest in our students and families.

Monica serves as the Manager of Government Compliance for Terracon, an engineering company based out of Olathe, Kansas, since she joined the company in 2015. Prior to joining Terracon, Monica worked for Black & Veatch, where she worked in procurement, compliance, and project controls on several large, international projects, including two field assignments in Afghanistan. Monica previous served as the Director of the Kansas City Branch Office of the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office. She also served as an International Consultant with BearingPoint, Inc’s, a tenure which included a two-year assignment in Afghanistan. 

Monica is very active in the civic community. This year, she has been appointed to the Housing Authority of Kansas City as a member of its Board of Commissioners and as a Board Member of the Jacob L. and Ella C. Loose Foundation. She is an active member of the Junior League of Kansas City where she successfully co-chaired C3KC, a community leadership development summit, in its inaugural year, recently served as its inaugural Director of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee on the Board of Directors, and will serve as its 2023-2024 Director of Finance. 

Monica previously served as the Chair of the Board for Niles Home for Children.  She also served on the boards of SCLC of Greater Kansas City, Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus, University of Missouri Extension and Outreach Council, International Relations Council of Greater Kansas City, and the Human Rights Commission for the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

Monica earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, and Masters Degrees in Organizational Development Psychology and Management with an emphasis in Project Management, both from Avila University. Additionally, she earned a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University.
