Interim Superintendent Says She'll Lead Kansas City Public Schools 'Without Missing a Beat

Kansas City Public Schools is entering the new school year without the leadership of its longtime superintendent, Mark Bedell. But it hopes to maintain the momentum he generated.

 

“I know exactly what we need to do to move forward, because I had the privilege to work alongside him in most of what we've done,” said Dr. Jennifer Collier, who will serve as the district’s interim superintendent for the next school year.

Ms. Holliday-Scott Named Interim Chief of Staff

CharnissaHollidayScott-CROP-BENCH.jpgCharnissa Holliday-Scott, Esq., has been selected as Dr. Jennifer Collier’s Interim Chief of Staff for the 2022-23 school year. Ms. Holliday-Scott is not new to Kansas City Public Schools. She worked for the school district from 1997-2007 and returned in 2019 as the Director of Education Systems. As Chief of Staff, Ms. Holliday-Scott’s work will focus on facilitating and overseeing the Interim Superintendent's transition team, assessing and reviewing internal district processes, participating in the Blueprint 2030 process and collaborating with executive team members to determine and prioritize operational and educational strategies to move KCPS in attaining its strategic goals. She will also continue to consult on legal matters, negotiate and lead education collaboration projects with charter schools, participate in government relations work and oversee district charter school sponsorship accountability and compliance.

 

During her previous time with Kansas City Public Schools, she spent over ten years working in Exceptional Education, which covered the areas of Special Education, Gifted Education and Section 504. Anthony Holland Named New Central Principal

MrAnthonyHolland_BENCH.jpgMr. Anthony Holland will be serving as the new principal of Central High School. Many Central students and staff already know Mr. Holland from his role as assistant principal. He is a proud, third-generation KCPS graduate.

 

Mr. Holland was born in Kansas City, Missouri. After graduating from the Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts, he earned his first — and favorite! — degree from Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley. He also holds a bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Graceland University and a Master’s of Science in School Leadership from Baker University. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Educational Leadership at Baker. Mr. Holland is a career educator with 18 years of experience who has taught students at every level from pre-K to high school. He has worked as an ISS Supervisor, Recovery Room/Behavior Interventionist, reading coach, classroom teacher, PBIS team leader, baseball coach and assistant principal. For Mr. Holland, it is a privilege to serve in the neighborhoods where he grew up. He and his wife, Anya, a music teacher in Liberty, have four children: Alana, Alivia, Anthony III and Chamberlain.

Dr. Keyona Powell Named New Paseo Principal

DrKeyonaPowell-BENCH.jpgDr. Keyona Powell has been named principal of Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. Dr. Powell, previously Dean of Students at Northeast High School, stepped in this spring as Paseo’s interim principal.

 

Dr. Powell holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana, a Master’s of Science in Counseling from The University of the District of Columbia and a PhD in Education Leadership from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. With 15 years of experience in education, Dr. Powell promotes student academic and social emotional development by enhancing the student experience through partnerships, program innovation, classroom instruction, direct support and a supportive, inclusive school culture. Utilizing an innovative leadership lens, Dr. Powell contributes to students' and staffs' individual development through the creation of a vibrant, healthy, resilient and rigorous learning environment. She is committed to furthering excellence at Paseo.

Missed last week's Enrollment Fair? You can still enroll your student in KCPS! Stop by the Board of Education, 2901 Troost Ave., to get help with your application from our enrollment specialists. We're here 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until the first day of school. But don't wait! The sooner we have your information, the sooner we can arrange transportation and other services for your family.
