Business and Finance

Erin Thompson was appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) on July 1, 2023, bringing nearly three decades of dedicated service in Business and Finance to the district. Over her career with KCPS, Mrs. Thompson has held key roles in financial oversight and strategic planning, including Senior Budget Specialist, Budget Officer, Director of Business Services, and Executive Director of Business and Finance, and Chief Financials and Operations Officer (CFOO). Her responsibilities now encompass Budget, Finance, Purchasing, Payroll, and Benefits.

Mrs. Thompson holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). Under her leadership, KCPS has consistently maintained a balanced budget aligned with the Superintendent's academic priorities, achieving an operating reserve level of 25% or more of the annual budget. These achievements have contributed to the district’s A+ credit rating from Standard & Poor’s, a testament to its robust financial health. Additionally, Mrs. Thompson has championed Women and Minority Business Enterprise (MWBE) participation, working toward the Board's goal of 18% annual participation in district procurement.

Mrs. Thompson is a proud alumna of KCPS, having attended grades K-12 as a student, and graduating from Southwest High School. Her commitment to community extends beyond her role at KCPS, as she serves on the Steward Board and Finance Committee at Ebenezer AME Church. In her role as CFO, Mrs. Thompson remains steadfast in her dedication to maintaining a sound financial foundation that supports student success and operational excellence across KCPS.
