School Counseling Mission

The KCPS School Counseling Program strives to uphold the promise of an enhanced and equitable educational experience so Kansas City students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. Graduates will be prepared with experiences that will bring positive value to the greater community in their future career and life endeavors.

School Counseling Vision

The KCPS School Counseling Department believes that students deserve an enhanced school experience that supports the holistic and diverse needs of students and families. Collaboration and open communication with students and families are essential to promote engagement and success in the learning process.

School Counselors

Professional School Counselors are licensed professionals who are trained to develop and deliver a comprehensive school counseling program. The American School Counseling Association’s (ASCA) National Model guides school counselors in the development of a program that supports the academic growth, social and emotional development, and college and career readiness of all students.

School counselors are advocates who provide support to maximize all students' potential and academic achievement. In partnership with educators, families, and the community, school counselors establish a culture of high expectations where students are empowered to reach their potential while utilizing their unique abilities and interests.

The Role of the School Counselor

School Counselors are an integral part of the overall education program. Counselors support the academic, social-emotional and personal growth of all students through individual and small-group sessions, and classroom instruction. School counselors help all students:

Apply academic achievement strategies
Manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills
Plan for postsecondary options

School Counseling Services

Individual Student Planning

Individual student planning allows the school counselor to work with K–12 students to develop academic, personal, and college and career goals. It provides an opportunity for students to assess their educational needs and personal interests to assist in determining a path that will lead them to their future goals. When engaging in individual planning, school counselors give students and families the resources they need to create a rigorous and relevant academic and career program that prepares them for future success.

Responsive Services

Responsive services allow the school counselor to address the immediate needs of students and schools through counseling services in individual or small-group settings, or crisis response. School counselors provide students and families with resources and assistance during their time of need.

Direct services are face-to-face or virtual interactions between school counselors and students. This includes:
