KCPS Superintendent Search Summary Report:
KCPSSearchSummaryReport.pdf

Attached is the Superintendent Search Summary Report, developed by JG Consulting, in consultation with the Kansas City Public School Board. This document is the output of the superintendent search community engagement in which JG Consulting interviewed a broad range of stakeholders in one on one meetings, town halls and group sessions. Additionally, the same questions were available via an online survey. The summary report was the basis for the leadership profile being used by the Board to evaluate candidates and JG Consulting to attract candidates.

Superintendent Search Updates

The Kansas City Public Schools Board of Directors is committed to conducting a robust and transparent search for its next superintendent of schools. The board has approved a contract with JG Consulting. JG Consulting will assist the board's national search for the next KCPS superintendent.

On October 26, the board approved a contract with JG Consulting to assist the board's national search for the next KCPS superintendent.

On November 9, the Board of Directors met with JG Consulting. As part of the search process, the Kansas City School Board of Directors will place a very high emphasis on community engagement. The community’s voice will be critical in helping define the leadership characteristics, qualities and qualifications of our next superintendent. In December, the Board will engage parents, staff, students and a range of community stakeholders to ensure the viewpoints of a broad cross-section of the Kansas City community are represented. Updates regarding community engagement, as well as other aspects of the hiring process, will be shared on this page, during regularly scheduled board meetings and other channels as appropriate.

On December 14th, the following update was provided by the board.

In thinking through the timeline and logistics of this search, the Board had in depth conversation with our consultants.

  • As we've shared, this search will be a national one and the board is invested in securing the best possible candidates.
  • At the advisement of JG Consulting, securing candidates for this search will be much for fruitful if we keep the names confidential prior to a finalist being named. This is because qualified sitting superintendents would prefer to reveal the details about their candidacy once they are selected as the finalist.
  • The Board values community/stakeholder feedback during this search so we will incorporate what we hear at town halls, stakeholder meetings and through surveys, into the candidate profile.
  • The Board will then conduct interviews with candidates and make the final selection for the next superintendent of KCPS.
  • We are relying on the expertise of our consultants and multiple superintendents who shared how the market dynamics have shifted affecting the recruitment of superintendents.
  • In order to honor one of our biggest responsibilities in this role, which is to hire the superintendent, the board feels that this is the path forward that will yield the best candidate pool and therefore the best superintendent of KCPS.
