Parents as Teachers

During the years between birth and kindergarten there are important times when specific kinds of learning must take place for your child to develop to the fullest. Parents as Teachers can help you to capture those windows of opportunity so your child starts school ready to succeed.

All young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed. The mission of Parents as Teachers is to provide information, support, and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.

KCPS Parents as Teachers shares that mission by providing established and emerging research-based information to parents to promote parent knowledge of early childhood development and best parenting practices, while understanding and appreciating the diverse cultures and traditions of families who reside within the Kansas City Public School District boundaries.

Parents as Teachers is a voluntary program that offers personal home visits, social activities, playgroups, parenting classes, and various health-related and developmental screenings to participating families. The early years of life are critical for optimal development and provide the foundation for success in school, and in life and parents are their children's first and most influential teachers.

Head Start

About Head Start

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that has been successfully serving low-income children and their families for over fifty years. It is a child-focused program with an overall goal of increasing school readiness and socialization for young children three and four years old. This is accomplished by providing a rich preschool environment, engaging and supporting the family, and connecting with the community.

Head Start programs support children's growth and development in a positive learning environment through a variety of services, which include:

  • Early learning: Children's readiness for school and beyond is fostered through individualized learning experiences. Through relationships with adults, play, and planned and spontaneous instruction, children grow in many aspects of development. Children progress in social skills and emotional well-being, along with language and literacy learning, and concept development
  • Health: Each child's perceptual, motor, and physical development is supported to permit them to fully explore and function in their environment. All children receive health and development screenings, nutritious meals, oral health and mental health support. Programs connect families with medical, dental, and mental health services to ensure that children are receiving the services they need.
  • Family well-being: Parents and families are supported in achieving their own goals, such as housing stability, continued education, and financial security. Programs support and strengthen parent-child relationships and engage families around children's learning and development.

Montessori

Montessori is an innovative, child-centered approach to education, developed a century ago by a woman ahead of her time. Working with institutionalized and inner-city youngsters, Dr. Maria Montessori was struck by how avidly the children absorbed knowledge from their surroundings. Given developmentally appropriate materials and the freedom to follow their interests, they joyfully taught themselves.

The goal of Montessori education is to foster a child’s natural inclination to learn. Montessori teachers guide rather than instruct, linking each student with activities that meet his interests, needs, and developmental level. The classroom is designed to allow movement and collaboration, as it also promotes concentration and a sense of order. Unique learning materials beckon from accessible shelves, inviting small hands to take on new challenges, 1 concept or skill at a time.
