With colder weather arriving, we have been planning for the potential of snow/inclement weather days and Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) days for the upcoming winter season in KCPS. With this, we wanted to communicate how we will conduct any upcoming snow day plans.


Families can help their children build bright futures by using a new and easier online process to apply for enrollment in one of the world-class options for the 2021-2022 academic year in Kansas City Public Schools. Applications for the 2021-2022 school year are currently being accepted.

What Should Families Expect When Applying For the 2021-2022 School Year

Please note that applications for Pre-K at Border Star, Holliday, and Hale Cook are closed as those schools and their wait lists are full.

For all other applications, our Admissions Office is working to process them as quickly as possible and you should expect a response within 7 business days at the latest.

For families that would like to apply for Kansas City Virtual Academy (KCVA) please call our Office of Educational Innovation (816-418-7780). Additional information on KCVA can be found by clicking here.

For families that would like to apply to one of our Head Start sites (Central Early Head Start, Richardson Early Learning or Woodland Early Learning), please click here and see the steps under ‘HOW DO I ENROLL IN HEAD START’.

Required documents to enroll in Kindergarten – 12th Grade:
(Kindergarten must be 5 years old by August 31)

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Student's current immunization record
  3. Parent/guardian photo ID (Proof of guardianship, if required)
  4. Previous school records – transcript, behavior, attendance (Signature Schools Only)
  5. Two proofs of residency (See “Acceptable Proofs of Residency” list below)

Documents to in enroll for Pre-Kindergarten:
(Students must be three or four years old on or before July 31, 2021 to qualify for Pre-K)

  1. Enrollment Application
  2. Student's verification of birth (Birth Certificate)
  3. Student's current immunization record
  4. Parent/guardian photo ID (Proof of guardianship, if required)
  5. Two proofs of residency
  6. Proof of household income:
    • Two current pay stubs
    • Current TANF award letter
    • Current SSI verification
    • Unemployment letter
    • Current 1040A tax form with W-2's, (employer letter on company letterhead, notarized letter from employer)
    • Child support letter


  • Valid Property Deed
  • Current Real Estate Tax Receipt
  • Mortgage Statement/Bill
  • Signed Residential Lease Agreement
  • *Residency Affidavit (click to download)Must be notarized
  • Current utility bill: electric, water or gas. (Disconnect or shutoff notices will not be accepted. Bills must be within the last 30 days)
  • Personal Property Tax Receipt (Past year)
  • Homeowner’s/Rental Insurance Policy (Current year)
  • Social Services, Social Security Statement, or Other Legal/Court Documents (TANF, SNAP letter)
  • Pay stub/Pay check (within 30 days)
  • Bank statement (within 30 days)

*Residency Affidavit (click to download) – If you provide a residency affidavit the Head of Household must provide one item from the Proof of Residency #1 list AND the parent/guardian must provide one item from the proof of residency #2 list in their own name.

  • Enrollments will be done online at a KCPS kiosk
  • Enrollment kiosks are sanitized after each use
