With cold and flu season upon us, KCPS has many resources for keeping your family healthy this fall. Remember, if your child is ill, please do not send them to school.

Family & Community Engagement

At Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS), we know that student success is deeply connected to family and community involvement. This Family Engagement Dashboard highlights the many ways our schools partner with families and communities to build strong, supportive environments for learning.

Compiled by Family and Community Engagement (FaCE) Liaisons at each school, this dashboard offers a transparent look at how we connect with families—from parent leadership meetings to home visits, school events, and local partnerships. It’s a celebration of the hard work happening every day across our district to make sure families feel welcomed, informed, and empowered.

*No FaCE Liaisons at the following schools: Border Star Montessori, Holliday Montessori, Richardson Early Learning Center, and Woodland Early Learning Center.

Instructions For Use

This public-facing dashboard gives insight into family engagement activities across KCPS. Here’s how to explore it:

What it Shows

Section Description

Parent Leadership Organization Meetings

Shows how many families and staff attended meetings with parent leadership groups (like PTOs, SACs, or PTAs). These meetings are focused on sharing information, planning school programs, and gathering input from family leaders.

Other Parent Committee / Group Meetings

Tracks other group meetings with parents/caregivers, such as Title I meetings, advisory councils, or school improvement planning sessions. These are key moments where families help shape school decisions.

Family Communication and Outreach

Highlights how each school communicates with families through newsletters, home visits, and check-ins. This shows the proactive steps schools are taking to keep families informed and involved.

Partnerships

Displays the number of organizations each school is partnering with to support students and families. These include nonprofits, local businesses, and community groups.

School Events

Captures family-centered events and activities held by schools. These are events for families (not staff or students), such as workshops, town halls, or community celebrations. Note: Parent-teacher conferences or internal staff meetings are not included here.

Capacity Building

Highlights how schools are working to build caregivers’ knowledge, skills, and confidence to support their child’s learning and development at home. These efforts strengthen the vital connection between school and home, helping families feel more equipped to guide and reinforce learning beyond the classroom.

Primary Focus

Each school event is tagged with a “primary focus area” that describes its main goal (e.g., back-to-school, literacy, STEM, attendance). This helps show what topics schools are prioritizing when connecting with families.
