Health Services

A team of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Clinical Paraprofessionals provide skilled medical care for students within the Kansas City Public Schools. Our goal is to promote the health and safety of students by providing the health services and knowledge necessary to enable children to be productive learners. By maintaining, improving and promoting health and safety, students can achieve a quality education.

State health regulations dictate that students cannot attend school unless they are properly immunized and can provide satisfactory evidence of immunizations or unless they are exempted.  

• All KCPS students must present documentation of up-to-date immunization status, including month, day, and year of each immunization before enrolling or attending school.
• For school attendance, children should be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, varicella and hepatitis B.
• To remain in school, students "in progress" must have an “Immunization In Progress” form (Imm.P.14), which includes the appointment date for needed immunizations, on file and must receive immunizations as soon as they become due. The student is in compliance as long as he/she continues to receive the appropriate immunization(s) at the correct intervals according to the ACIP recommendations.
  • In progress means that a child has begun the vaccine series and has an appointment for the next dose. This appointment must be kept and an updated record provided to the school. If the appointment is not kept, the child is no longer in progress and is noncompliant. (i.e., Hep B vaccine series was started but the child is not yet eligible to receive the next dose in the series.)
  • Religious (Imm.P.11A) and Medical (Imm.P.12) exemptions are allowed. The appropriate exemption card must be on file. Unimmunized children are subject to exclusion from school when outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases occur.

Please note that we will not allow your student to attend the first day of school without documentation of immunizations. We have included multiple locations where your child can receive immunizations.

Keeping Your Child Healthy

If your child has a fever of 100 or higher, or vomits, he/she may not return until they are fever/vomit free for one full school day without medication.

The safety of our students and staff is a very high priority in Kansas City Public Schools. School is a common place where kids can pick up a cold or flu and spread it around to their classmates. As a district, we are doing our part. School custodial staff clean and sanitize counters, desks, doorknobs, light switches, floors and sinks as part of their daily routine in all of our schools.
