About Carver

At George Washington Carver Dual Language School, all students are expected to be truly bilingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English by the time they complete 6th grade. Research shows that students who attend dual language schools generally have higher overall academic performance than students who attend single language schools. A dual language school provides instruction in two languages. At Carver, the two languages are Spanish and English. This language immersion model is an excellent way for students to quickly learn a second language. Students with dual language skills are more in demand in the work-force and generally earn higher incomes as adults. Dual language students also experience and gain an appreciation of other cultures. ¡Todo lo que queremos ser, eso seremos!

A dual language school provides instruction in two languages. Research shows that students who attend dual language schools generally have higher overall academic performance than students who attend single language schools. At Carver, kindergarten and 1st grade students receive classroom instruction in Spanish, although English Language Learners have opportunities to begin developing English skills.

Our goal is giving every student the opportunity to increased success in the next stage of their education. Students at Carver are expected to be truly bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English by the time they complete sixth grade. While students work to become proficient in a second language, they also develop an increased cultural awareness while reaching a high level of academic achievement. Students develop proficiency in the second language by hearing and using it to learn all of their school subjects rather than by studying the language itself.

There are no language requirements to enroll in kindergarten or first grade. However, because about half of the instruction is provided in Spanish beginning in 2nd grade, students may struggle to be successful without a good grasp of academic Spanish in the upper grades. Therefore, students are required to take a Spanish literacy test before being accepted for enrollment in grades 2-6.

Students are not required to speak fluent English to enroll. However, students in the upper grades who lack English skills may have difficulty with the curriculum and will be provided with additional services to help them be successful.

Admission Requirements: After the first grade, students must demonstrate language proficiency to enter this program.
