Health Guidelines

(Last Updated 8/5/2021)

2021-2022 School Year

The COVID-19 pandemic is a national crisis that poses a serious health risk for everyone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to update its guidance based on science and data. In March 2021, the CDC recommended a return to in-person learning. Kansas City Public Schools is committed to keeping schools open this year with proven mitigation strategies.

According to the CDC, vaccination is the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Promoting vaccination can help schools safely return to in-person learning as well as extracurricular activities and sports. As such, KCPS will require all staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or participate in weekly testing. KCPS highly recommends vaccination for students 12 and older as well as their families to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

KCPS continues to require all staff, students and visitors to wear masks in our buildings, regardless of vaccine status. In our schools, you will see our enhanced COVID-19 cleaning protocols in action. We have improved ventilation, arranged for social distancing to the extent possible and continue to offer symptomatic COVID-19 testing at all KCPS sites. For students who are instructed to isolate or quarantine, as well as families who continue to need a virtual option, we will continue to educate students through the Kansas City Virtual Academy.

We have created these guidelines to protect the health and wellness of students, staff and visitors when school buildings do begin to re-open. The good news is that we know that we can maximize the safety of our stakeholders during this pandemic by following three easy rules:

Mask On – Masks are required when in our school buildings.

Clean Up – We will keep our school buildings clean to the highest standards and we will encourage all students, staff, parents, guardians and visitors to monitor their own health and to practice excellent self-cleanliness practices, including washing their hands regularly and avoiding touching their own faces

Stay Safe – We will facilitate social distancing in our schools and other buildings and will encourage all students, staff, parents, guardians and visitors to maintain at least 3 feet social distancing from other people as much as possible.

If everyone works hard to follow the “Mask On, Clean Up and Stay Safe” guidelines during this pandemic, we are confident that we will minimize the number of positive COVID-19 cases that result from interactions in our buildings.
