With cold and flu season upon us, KCPS has many resources for keeping your family healthy this fall. Remember, if your child is ill, please do not send them to school.

Important Update: New Student Enrollment Policy

Effective Monday, September 29, our district will implement a new policy regarding student enrollment and start dates.

To ensure accurate placement and maintain a safe, supportive learning environment, students will no longer be able to enroll and begin classes on the same day.

What’s Changing

  • Students may enroll at any time but cannot start attending classes until after the district has received their official school records from their previous school.
  • Once a records request is made, the student’s prior school has 5 business days to send the records.

Why This Process Matters

Waiting to start classes until after we receive a student’s official school records allows the district to:

  • Place Students Accurately & Support Learning Needs
    • Review academic history, transcripts, and assessments to ensure correct grade and course placement.
    • Identify any advanced coursework, special programs, or interventions the student was receiving.
    • Confirm if the student needs special education, 504 accommodations, English language support, or other services so they are in place from day one.

  • Ensure Safety, Compliance & Smooth Transitions
    • Confirm there are no current suspensions, expulsions, or pending discipline issues that need to be addressed before the student begins classes.
    • Verify health and immunization records in compliance with state law.
    • Coordinate with the previous school to clarify any questions and securely transfer records in line with privacy laws.

By following this process, we help every student start school prepared, supported, and in the right environment for success.

Exceptions to the Waiting Period

Some students are federally protected and must be allowed to start school immediately, even if records have not yet arrived:

  1. Students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP)
    • Protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    • Immediate enrollment ensures special education services are not delayed.
  2. Students Experiencing Homelessness (McKinney-Vento Program)
    • Covered by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, which guarantees immediate enrollment for children and youth without a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.
    • This includes students living in shelters, motels, cars, campgrounds, or temporarily with others due to loss of housing or hardship.
  3. Students Arriving from Outside the United States.
    • Students enrolling from another country are exempt from the waiting period, as international records may take longer to obtain.
    • Immediate enrollment ensures these students can begin their education while the district works to gather relevant documentation.

These protections exist to remove barriers to education for vulnerable students and ensure they receive the services and stability they need without interruption.
