It's going to be a happier holiday and a brighter future for Kansas City Public Schools Security Officer Shandell Lowery-Terrell.
KC Scholars President and CEO Beth Tankersley-Bankhead presented Ofc. Lowery-Terrell with a college scholarship during a surprise event on Friday morning, Dec. 11 at Manual Career and Technical Center. A small group of KCPS staff and leaders were on hand to join the celebration.
Ofc. Lowery-Terrell is getting a $10,000 Adult Learner Scholarship from KC Scholars. It is renewable for up to five years.
"I'm just really speechless, happy and eager at the same time," Ofc. Lowery-Terrell said. "It is very much a surprise."
Lowery-Terrell has been part of the security team at KCPS for four years. She plans to use the scholarship to study social work.
"I want to be able to help the kids," she said. "This scholarship is a real gift."
