Congratulations are in order for Mr. Kevin Hogan! Last week, Mr. Hogan was randomly chosen to win a free two-year lease at Two Light Luxury Apartments as a part of the Kansas City Power & Light District partnership with KCPSEF.

KCPS Shares Gating Criteria

  • Read

Superintendent Mark Bedell and his leadership team shared their plans for how and when students will return to in-person classes during the KCPS Board of Directors virtual meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

At the heart of Dr. Bedell's presentation were the district's "gating criteria." This chart, shown above, lays out how KCPS will respond based on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region. Depending on this data, which will be provided by the Kansas City Health Department, students may begin to return to in-person classes if it is deemed safe.

KCPS is currently monitoring the gating criteria data and working with the Kansas City Health Department to determine a target date to begin to return to in-person teaching and learning. When we begin our in-person teaching and learning (for our distance learning students), it will be a phased-in process. Remember, our Kansas City Virtual Academy students will remain in the virtual academy when we begin in-person learning phases.

As mentioned during our Board of Directors meeting last night, we are monitoring a potential timeline of early November to begin this phase-in process.

This phased re-entry aligns with the back-to-school plans that KCPS released in July before the start of classes. At that time, we communicated that the decision to reopen school buildings would be based on science and data.

Dr. Bedell also provided an update to the Board about the extensive measures KCPS is taking to ensure that school buildings are clean and safe. That includes installing high-quality air filtration and circulation systems that exceed industry standards. The district will also be launching a COVID-19 tracking dashboard on its website.
