With cold and flu season upon us, KCPS has many resources for keeping your family healthy this fall. Remember, if your child is ill, please do not send them to school.

Special Education

Kansas City Public Schools offers a free and appropriate public education to all students who have been identified with a disability from ages three through age 21 residing within KCPS boundaries. Kansas City Public Schools envisions its schools as places where every student will develop a deep understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue higher education, obtain family-supporting employment, contribute to the civic well-being of the community, and have the opportunity for a rewarding and fulfilling life.

Students attending private/parochial schools within school district boundaries are also eligible to receive available services.

Disabilities include:

  • specific learning disabilities
  • intellectual disability
  • emotional disturbance
  • speech/language impairment
  • orthopedic impairment
  • visual impairment
  • hearing impairment
  • other health impairment
  • deaf/blind
  • multiple disabilities
  • autism
  • traumatic brain injury and
  • a young child with a developmental delay

The Special Education Department is responsible for the identification of and implementation of services for students with disabilities. Services are administered through the development of Individual Education Plans and 504 Plans with assessment services conducted by district educational diagnosticians.

Related services are also provided to eligible students as determined by the IEP (Individual Education Plan) Team. Services may include but not limited to the following:

  • Speech
  • Occupational and physical therapy services
  • Audiology
