Student working on his schoolwork

KCPS students are preparing to take their state-level assessments this week, which measure their progress toward the Missouri Learning Standards.

Participating in state assessments is an important opportunity to showcase the academic growth and intellectual promise of KCPS students. Last year, our students and staff rose to the challenge, earning a State APR score of 73 percent.

This year, we’re pushing forward together with a bold goal of achieving a fifth consecutive year of academic growth.

What is MAP vs EOC?

There are two different state-level tests—the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) and End-of-Course (EOC).

MAP testing is for students in grades 3-8:

  • Grades 3–8: English Language Arts and Mathematics

  • Grades 5 & 8: Science

These assessments measure student progress toward the Missouri Learning Standards, which outline the knowledge and skills students need for success in college, careers, and post‑secondary training. The standards align with the Show‑Me Standards, which define what all Missouri graduates should know and be able to do.

Find more information about the standards at https://dese.mo.gov/college-career-readiness/curriculum/missouri-learning-standards.

EOC testing is for students taking specific courses:

  • Algebra I

  • Algebra II

  • Biology

  • English II

  • Government

Like MAP assessments, EOCs are aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards and help measure student mastery of course‑specific content. Results support instructional planning and are included in DESE’s accountability reporting.

Tips to help your students prepare

  1. Prepare for test days: Make sure your student gets enough rest, arrives on time, and avoid scheduling appointments during the testing windows when possible.

  2. Help students read questions carefully: Some questions have multiple parts. Remind students to slow down and answer every part of each question.

  3. Build reading stamina: Encourage daily reading across a wide range of materials—books, magazines, articles, menus, or charts. Reading strengthens writing skills, and both are essential for assessment success.
